At first I was dumbfounded why the deftones, the only current band that plays hard music that I still listen to, would willingly go on a festival tour with metallica, limp bizkit and linkin park headlining. Then I got a dose of their new album, and suffice it to say, they're in very good company with all of those bands. This album makes p.o.d. look like Pink Floyd. I've seen bands topple over the climax and begin their ascent downward, Tool's in the process of it now. Never have I seen anyone do a complete 180 as the deftones have though. With the White Pony they were headed in a direction nobody had really gone to before, and it had everyone with a hope of saving metal excited. Turns out all it took to destroy everthing they have achieved was stef and a 7 string guitar tuned down a step and a half. They lost the balls it took to make an album that sounded different the way they made the White Pony. They even lost their trademark before that to make a metal song melodic like they did with Around the Fur. With the last 2 records, Chino mesmorized us with arguably the best voice in hard music, but he's now lost even the passion and purpose of the screaming that made Adrenaline such a powerful debut. This is the biggest letdown since the Smashing Pumpkins released adore and machina. And of course they'll probably make millions with a quadruple platinum release, but at least none of their fan base will bother to listen this go round. Chalk up another indistinguishable metal band on the 20 minute loop of your most "modern" radio station. Have fun with your new pre-pubescent audience, you deserve every fucking second of it. |

You can get the new single "minerva" (which is better than the previous title -- the late great planet earth, but not my much) at www.deftonesworld.com. it seems kroq ran a premiere of it. the song doesn't really delve into what i was raving about, trust me the rest of the album will, but it is fairly subpar for a deftones song. especially the first single. it isn't in the class of shove it, bqad, or change. anyway, i'ts just kinda.... yeah, a new song, but it's there. |

Jim, if you're sick of all the crap nu-metal going around today, my advice is to look for some more obscure stuff. They may be hard to find, but there are a lot of underground bands out there that kick ass, you just gotta look hard. I've recently started listening to a lot of stuff that will NEVER be played on the radio or on MTV, and there's so much I can barely keep up with all of it. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to sound hardcore or something, I've just found that it worked for me when I got sick of everything else out there. _________________ blah blah blah... odin..... blah blah.... mjolner.... blah blah .... thor |

Fuckin' A... but seriously, some of the stuff I've been listening to isn't as insane as CoB. I just stopped trying to make you guys listen to it because I didn't think you'd be too open to it... _________________ blah blah blah... odin..... blah blah.... mjolner.... blah blah .... thor |

There are a few saviours, they are few and far between though and extremely hard to find....
and you will know us by the trail of the dead
glifted
centaur
grandaddy
sparta
new end original
older ones....
far
failure
hum
placebo
Almost impossible to find anything resembling metal that is both new and listenable though. Around the Fur was the last great metal record, and i'm pretty sure it'll be a long time coming before it gets any better than that. I'd be impressed if anybody knew of/listened to any of those bands. |

Alright, I've heard the first track off the new Deftones aside from minerva, and it's called "Lucky You." And, well, it's impressive as hell to tell the truth, pretty amazing actually. I haven't been blown away like this in quite some time, and I usually can't stand electronic music. You can get the .mp3 of kazaa, it's been released on the matrix reloaded sountrack (the self-titled album hasn't been ripped as of this writing). It's completely opposite of everything that I've been expecting, especially for a matrix soundtrack. The way Maverick has been promoting this record/trying to parallel the Deftones with linkin park and limp bizkit is laughable and pathetic.
Now my only huge concern is the obvious. Anyone who listens to this song will immediately know that Stef had absolutely no input on the writing, especially since there aren't any guitars. Since I'm pretty sure that Chino wrote almost all of the White Pony, in addition to this new one, I'm still scared to think of what Stef decided to contribute. We'll see soon, and hexagram is the worst Deftones song to ever be released (another 2:00 clip off the upcoming cd).
So far there is 1 awful song (hexagram), 1 alright song (minerva), and 1 amazing song (lucky you). Regardless, at least they're still capable of blowing my mind, which is a relief in itself. _________________ I take pride as the King of Illiterature. |

i've heard lucky you, minerva, and the clip of hexagram. i would have to say hexagram is awful, minerva is alright, and the same with luck you. it's not anything that they haven't done before, if they were exploring new boundaries, i would understand, but it's just white pony revisited for luck you, sadly to say. to call it simply amazing jim, that would be blasphemy. it is nowhere near what they could of done, i think everybody knows that. maybe it's a better song compared to the other 2 that you have heard, but that shouldn't make lucky you such an amazing song. old deftones is the best, i am the only one who thinks adrenaline is the best metal record out their, just needed to be recorded better. as far as luck you goes, it's ok... nothing spectacular. _________________ "rock n' roll, rock n' roll, sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" |

Tool is in the process of descending??? are you kidding. Lateralus was one of the most brilliant albums of the past 10 years. I still cant decide if Aenema or Lateralus is better. James, you are a moron. Go listen to the "Knot" or some piss poor band like that. Pick up the new Anthrax, the past 2 Opeth albums or wait til June 10 when the new Metallica comes out. Yeah, yeah, yeah...Metallica sucks...whatever...eat a dick. I have heard samples of this new record and it has blown my mind. Be sure to pick the new BLS cause Zakk Wylde makes all the new metal jokes look like the talentless boys from Poison (which they are). |
