Right now i'm listening to the new album for the first time and its more depressing than sigur ros. Chino can barely sing at all anymore and all trace of his days of mascera, be quiet and drive, mx, teenager and passenger are clearly over. I've been reading all these review of the album and stuff, glorifying his range on some of the songs...i sadly disagree, he sounded better on adrenaline to be honest. He has that yelling coon thing down pat and thinks he has to use it in every song. Anniversary of an uninteresting event is by far the best track on the record followed by minerva...since when do the singles on a deftones album surpass the rest of the songs? Good Morning Beautiful is pretty good, so is battleaxe. But still, comparitively speaking...this album is the amnesiac of thier career. White Pony went places no other heavy act was going or had been and taking over a year to actually make this record it feels like they created the entire thing in a week or less. Even abe, one of my favorite drumers of all time, cops out and barely gives any diversity or sponanaity. Steph uses the same tone in every song and there is just no variety in his playing. Its not a terrible album, but just disapointing to a point that i fear the deftones have passed thier prime for good and i'll have to settle for mediocrity from here on out... _________________ The new STYX album is comprable to a parking lot full of whale vomit. |

I'm actually pleasantly suprised. This album really is a tough listen, but I was expecting some bullshit reversion to around the fur. While hexagram proves they'll never be the same intensity driven band they were on around the fur, they definitely didn't totally cop out for this record. I'm still trying to figure out why the fuck Maverick is pushing them as a nu-metal band that they clearly aren't. I'm not sure if this is a total growth on their part, maybe sideways step from the white pony. The only things that drive me insane are stef's retarded metal riffs. Aside from hexagram and when girls telephone boys, I enjoy just about everything. They have very odd rythms in thier songs. Let's face it, the deftones are and never were catchy. I might have the T3 syndrome, where I'm expecting less than nothing but getting something decent. Chino and his lyrics/cover art can go to hell, they suck. Chino obviously still has his voice -- live it's always a different story -- but he's definitely giving way to weirder influences this time around. With the white pony it was a Smiths and Cure influence, this go round its almost like a velvet underground type thing. I'm pretty sure I'll end up liking this album a lot more than I do now, and yes -- they are way above and beyond what they were on adrenaline. The other 3 are debatable, but this band had "another bullshit nu-metal act" written all over them on adrenaline. Around the Fur Chino started to sing, the White Pony was pretty amazing in its sheer uniqueness. The self-titled one might end up that way for me, might not - I dunno quite yet. It definitely doesn't have anything that sticks out right away, but neither did downward is heavenward the first 5 times i listened to that one. _________________ I take pride as the King of Illiterature. |

I'm on my 3rd listen of the album and taking on a new look, its very difficult to get into...fair warning, i hated it the first listen, and things are starting to come in a bit clearer and i'm much more impressed. Good Morning Beautiful, Bloody Cape, Needles and Pins, and Minerva are all extremely good. And of course Anniversary...i'm sure i'll love it in a weeks time. _________________ The new STYX album is comprable to a parking lot full of whale vomit. |

I'm now on my 10th or so listen, and I am a prick and shouldn't be trusted. This album is phenominal. The Deftones astound me once again and make a record that really challanges the listener. On paper, you would think that they are some shitty Korn rip off, or a Limp Bizkit bandwaggon rider. Then they get in the studio and blow your mind. This album doesn't fit into any catagory, not metal or hardcore or rapcore or all these retarded new genre's the industry has created to dilute the talent pool. This is an album that stands on its own and is simply...Deftones. It does for music what Around The Fur did for metal. They don't want to gain any new fans for sure, they'll most likely loose quite a few. Chino has taken the helm and used his influences in the most efficent and original way in quite a while. They are doing what they want to do and despite the vd infested whore from Detriot says about them, they have made a record that is neither hard nor soft, it just is and can be interpreted in unfathomable ways. Maverick is the worst record label and shouldn't ever be allowed to handle any musican. Madonna needs to stop fucking up great directors and having all these bastard children that get named whatever trendy shit is popular that week and just begin rotting in hell where she belongs. Regardless, this is an amazing album worth everyone's time and patience, as I freely admit, I hated it at first and now am a changed man. Please take the challange and support this band to the ends of the earth...Again I'm a prick...sorry guys... _________________ The new STYX album is comprable to a parking lot full of whale vomit. |

Agreed. Very much so. This album is so much more important than you can imagine. It takes leaps the White Pony only dreamed of. I still can't think of a release this amazing in quite some time. It's definitely hitting me the same exact way Downward Is Heavenward did. It's unreal. Go out and buy it the second you can tomorrow. They deserve it. _________________ I take pride as the King of Illiterature. |
